Fort Huachuca is the largest employer in Cochise County, home to the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and more than 48 tenant organizations. That produces a year round calendar of ceremonies and unit events, most of them early, many of them outdoors. Lucy's Coffee Express is based in Sierra Vista, minutes from the gate, and brings a full espresso bar to the installation on a mobile coffee bike.

The bike fits change of command and change of responsibility ceremonies, promotion and pinning events, retirement ceremonies and receptions, organizational days and family days, Soldier and Family Readiness Group functions, volunteer appreciation events, holiday parties, Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day observances, and MWR and USO events. It runs without a generator, so nothing is droning under the remarks, and it holds a footprint about the size of a folding table.

Access takes planning, and we would rather be straight with you about it than promise it is simple. Visitors needing access for less than 30 days do not need a government sponsor, but every one of our staff has to clear a background check at the Visitor Control Center, which sits at the Van Deman Gate and is open weekdays only, roughly 5:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening. That means a Saturday family day or a pre dawn ceremony has to be badged in beforehand, on a weekday, not on the morning of your event. Tell us the date early and we will handle our side of it. Buffalo Soldier Gate is the 24 hour gate, and oversize vehicles route through Van Deman for inspection.

Two other things worth knowing when you plan. Events bringing more than 250 guests through the gates need an Ease of Access request submitted to Physical Security roughly 90 days out, so a large organizational day is not a two week decision. And food service on the installation runs under the Army's approved source and food service rules, so tell us early if your event needs a vendor approved through your unit or the Garrison, and we will work through it with your point of contact rather than showing up and hoping.

Brown Parade Field sits in the Old Post historic district, and setup there is your protocol NCO's call, not ours. We park where they put us: beside the field, at the building door, or inside the reception hall, ready to pour the moment guests arrive. We are a small local business, so early call times and back to back ceremonies are workable.
